Explore cultural encounters through scrolls and maps
The displays examine how Japanese people saw foreigners and how overseas visitors saw Japan. Ryosenji holds more than three thousand items relating to the Black Ships and Japan’s opening, including paintings, colour prints, illustrated books and old maps. Original objects are rotated in the exhibition room rather than the whole collection being displayed at once.
The Black Ships Theatre and free-entry shop
The Black Ships Theatre and permanent display area introduce the history through three films using collection material, with English and Chinese versions available. The entrance hall includes a museum shop selling original postcards and historical gifts. The shop is free to enter, so it can be visited alongside the paid exhibitions.
Admission categories and Wednesday and year-end closures
Opening is 9:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:40. Adults pay ¥600, elementary through senior-high pupils ¥300, and seniors ¥500. The museum closes Wednesdays except public holidays and also December 24–26. A twenty-percent disability discount includes accompanying carers. Match your school-status category and visit date when planning time for the displays.
Access to the temple grounds and visitor facilities
The entrance is inside Ryosenji Temple’s grounds, around ten minutes on foot from Izukyu-Shimoda Station. Free parking accommodates thirty cars and seven large buses. A ramp and loan wheelchairs are provided, and guide dogs are admitted. Ryosenji is associated with the negotiations and supplementary treaty at Shimoda in 1854; walking the grounds and nearby streets connects the exhibits with their setting.
Other stops to combine within Shimoda
Walk between the museum at Ryosenji and Cafe Pepe on Perry Road before continuing to Shimoda Tokyu Hotel. Pepe closes at 16:00 and on Sundays; MoBS last admission is 16:40. The roadside station is a separate harbour stop, while the museum has its own free parking.
