Regional styles and donated collections
Opened in 1975, the museum grew from Kaname Fukazawa's collection donated to the former Naruko town in 1953 and dolls offered to the annual festival since 1957. It introduces more than approximately five thousand dolls from eleven traditions. The Fukazawa and Mizoguchi collections, the latter rich in miniature examples, reveal differences in expression, scale and painted flowers.
Lathes, painting and wooden toys
Displays include a two-person lathe, the making process, wooden toys and a sales area. Naruko dolls are also known for neck joints that squeak when turned. The published 2026 demonstration period is July 18–November 29, with artisans taking turns. Watching shaping and painting adds another perspective to the differences visible in the finished dolls.
Paint a doll and take it home that day
Doll painting costs ¥1,500 including tax per doll. The finished piece is wax-polished and can be taken home the same day. Parties of five or more need a reservation. Visitors can use the displayed faces and patterns as inspiration or create their own design. Admission costs ¥500, ¥300, ¥200 and ¥150 by age group; group rates apply from twenty people.
Getting here and the winter calendar
The museum is around five minutes by car from Naruko Onsen Station and forty-five minutes from Furukawa Interchange, with free parking. It opens 9:00–16:00 from April through December and closes January–March. In snow, the approach before Naruko Tunnel may be impassable; drivers arriving from Naruko can continue through the tunnel and turn left immediately afterward. Large outdoor dolls mark the entrance.
