Limestone formations and the underground waterfall
Around seven hundred metres of the roughly two-kilometre cave system are open to visitors. See milky-white and reddish formations, stalagmites and columns, followed by an underground waterfall around thirty metres high in the deepest section. A wooden cable car leads to the entrance; allow around thirty minutes for the cave visit.
Standard admission, cave temperature and pet restriction
Standard admission is ¥1,000 for adults, ¥800 for junior- and senior-high pupils, and ¥500 for children aged five through elementary school. Groups of fifteen or more pay ¥900, ¥700 and ¥450 respectively. The cave stays at 12–14°C, so a light extra layer is useful even in warm weather. Pets cannot enter either Otaki Cave or Jomon Cave.
Autumn 2026 hours and Jomon Cave operating days
From October 1 to November 20, opening is at 8:30 and last admission at 17:00. All facilities close Tuesdays from October; the November 3 public holiday is open, with closure instead on November 4. The separate Jomon Cave Mystery Tour operates only on weekends and public holidays, accepting visitors 9:00–16:00, with a listed rate of ¥500 for junior-high pupils and older visitors or ¥250 for children.
Travel from town by car and use the free parking
The cave is around fifteen minutes by car from central Gujo Hachiman, with three hundred free parking spaces. There is no public transport from town to the site, so arrange a car or taxi journey. Allow time for the entrance cable car and cave route, and account for the autumn Tuesday closure and last admission.
Other stops to combine within Gujo
After Otaki Cave, drive into Hachiman for a meal at Izumisaka and a stay at Sekisuien. The cave has three hundred free spaces; use town parking such as the old government-office hall when walking around the centre. Account for Tuesday cave closures and Izumisaka’s Tuesday and second-Wednesday closures.
