Temple 28 and the Namegawa Kannon tradition
Tradition dates the foundation to 838 under the monk Jikaku Daishi. The principal deity is Eleven-faced Kannon. The temple’s origin story describes a small Kannon image recovered from the river during a year of cold weather and famine, followed by relief for the people. Devotion here is associated with longevity, safe childbirth and child-rearing.
The thatched Niomon gate and 1696 main hall
The Niomon is an eight-post gate with a thatched hipped roof, rebuilt in the Bunki era of 1501–1504. It is a National Important Cultural Property; pillars that appear round actually have sixteen sides. The copper-roofed main hall dates from 1696 and is protected by Chiba Prefecture. Comparing the modest gate and substantial hall adds interest to a grounds walk.
Bishamonten and other objects in the grounds
The outdoor Bishamonten is one of the Shimofusa Seven Lucky Gods. Paired pines and a Basho verse monument face a bronze hokyointo pagoda cast in 1718. Objects associated with Ryushoin, including a bronze gong and roof ornament, are displayed at the Shimofusa museum, allowing a visit to explore religious objects as well as the buildings.
Seasonal reception hours and station access
The temple lists gate and goshuin reception hours of 08:00–17:00 in March–October and 08:00–16:00 in November–February. Walk about twenty minutes from JR Namegawa Station. The temple gives a drive of roughly 14 km and thirty minutes from Narita Interchange, with parking outside the gate. Winter reception ends one hour earlier than in the warmer months.
Other stops to combine within Narita
Central Narita and the temple, the airport area, Shimofusa and Taiei involve different directions of travel. These suggestions include other parts of the same city. Coordinate meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival with the necessary driving or rail journeys. Related parking serves its own area and has conditions separate from a facility’s dedicated parking or guest parking at accommodation.
