Remembering the former farm
The former Shimofusa imperial farm played a role in livestock development from the early Meiji period. It moved to Takanezawa in Tochigi in 1969, and this hall was built on the office site. A terrain model, film, vegetation and climate diagrams, and railway maps introduce the landscape and transport connections of the farm era.
Livestock, agriculture and research
Seven sections include the farm’s outline, history, livestock and agriculture, and research development. Saddles, stirrups, documents and agricultural machinery imported in the Meiji period illustrate its combined farming activities. Material on foreign advisers and the introduction of veterinary science adds context to the adoption of new techniques in modern Japan.
An imperial carriage and local literature
An imperial carriage and records of imperial visits form part of the collection. The literary section explores Sanrizuka’s connections with writers including Yoshu Mizuno and Kotaro Takamura. Another section displays seats, a dining table, a bed and other fittings made for the DC-8-55 used during the emperor and empress’s 1971 European visit.
Free admission within the memorial park
Admission is free, with opening hours of 09:00–16:30. The hall closes on Mondays, or Tuesday after a holiday Monday, and from December 29 through January 3. Buses from JR Narita Station’s east side toward Sanrizuka, Tako or Yokaichiba take about twenty minutes; walk about three minutes from Sanrizuka stop. Combine the indoor displays with the park outside.
Other stops to combine within Narita
Central Narita and the temple, the airport area, Shimofusa and Taiei involve different directions of travel. These suggestions include other parts of the same city. Coordinate meal-order deadlines and accommodation arrival with the necessary driving or rail journeys. Related parking serves its own area and has conditions separate from a facility’s dedicated parking or guest parking at accommodation.
