Sumie Family Aquarium offers a close look at the marine and freshwater life around Nobeoka. Its compact scale makes it easy to include in a day on the Sumie coast. Explore the displays linking local rivers with the sea, then continue with a walk along the shore.

Explore the connections between river and sea
Displays introduce fish from the Gokase River system, Hyuga-nada and other rivers and lakes. Japanese lates are among the highlights, allowing comparisons with more familiar local fish. The city describes a collection of roughly 150 species and 800 animals. Look at body shapes, swimming behaviour and habitats as well as size to make the most of the compact galleries.
Admission and the afternoon cutoff
Admission is ¥300, or ¥200 for primary/junior-high pupils; groups of twenty or more pay ¥250/¥150. Although the building closes at 17:00, entry ends at 16:30. Keep that cutoff in mind if visiting after time on the beach. Seeing the aquarium first and walking outside afterwards is another practical sequence for a coastal afternoon.
Touching pool and neighbouring activities
A touching pool adds a hands-on element; follow the instructions provided for interacting with the animals. Nearby options include putting golf, tennis courts and play equipment in Beach-no-Mori. Aquarium admission is separate from charges for rides, the dog run and other activities. Combine indoor observation with outdoor recreation according to the weather and your group’s energy.
Reaching Sumie and planning around closures
Closed Wednesdays, moving to the following day for public holidays, and December 31–January 1. Sumie Family Travel Village is about twenty-three minutes by car from Nobeoka Station or five from Sumie IC. The aquarium is at 69-1 Sumie-machi; the main management office is at 1450-2, so use the aquarium’s name for navigation. Village cabins offer an overnight option with a separate accommodation reservation.
