Takao 599 Museum offers an indoor introduction to the mountain’s living world before or after a walk. 16
Sixteen display tables of mountain nature
Nature Collection uses sixteen display tables with seasonal plants preserved in clear resin and insects mounted as if taking flight. Nature Wall combines a beech tree and animals with projected seasonal scenes. Relate these displays to details seen on the mountain, or study natural shapes and colours indoors on a rainy day.
Walking information and a small play mountain
The 599 Guide screens introduce mountain interests and ways to explore them through three themes. Play Mountain reproduces its contours for younger children; outdoor shoes and food are prohibited there. A nursing room, free wheelchair loans and accessible toilets on both floors support visits. Combine displays, rest and outdoor time around the distance each companion can walk.
Seasonal hours and maintenance dates
Hours are 8:00–17:00 April–November and 8:00–16:00 December–March, with last admission thirty minutes before closing. Normally open daily, the museum schedules maintenance closures on December 3, 2026 and March 4, 2027. General entry is free; selected events, special displays and normally paid second-floor room use are separate. Cafe last orders and shop service also end thirty minutes before museum closing.
Walking from Takaosanguchi and entry rules
The museum at 2435-3 Takaomachi is about four minutes from Keio Takaosanguchi Station. It has no parking; nearby Sanroku and Keio Takao lots provide separate options. The whole site is nonsmoking, and pets other than assistance dogs cannot enter. Remove crampons before entry and eat only in designated places. Arrange walking equipment before moving through the displays.
Other stops to combine within Hachioji
Around Takaosanguchi, walk between foot-of-mountain exhibits and soba shops; Gongen Chaya needs a cable-car journey and further mountain walking. Coordinate luggage drop, mountain meals, the parking tariff and return time for a full hike or a shorter lower-area walk. Accommodation at the foot and daytime mountain teahouses have different service hours.
