Minesweeping and submarines floor by floor
The first floor covers JMSDF history, the second minesweeping and the third submarines. Mine-clearance displays connect postwar navigation routes and overseas operations with mine technology, ship construction and a recreated deck. Submarine exhibits explain compartments, daily equipment, crew training and rescue systems, preparing visitors for the actual boat through objects and film.
Inside the 76.2-metre Akishio
Akishio served from 1986 to 2004 and was lifted ashore in 2006. The captain’s and officers’ rooms illustrate life and construction within a submarine. Allow around forty to sixty minutes for the museum. Lifts serve the galleries, but the boat is narrow: pushchairs are left at its entrance and children carried. Wheelchair users are offered a smaller chair for the interior visit.
November 15 rooftop opening and November 14–15 night mode
The operator marks the November 1 anniversary event as ended. The next fourth-floor rooftop opening is planned for November 15, 2026, 10:00–17:00, overlooking the submarine upper deck and Kure Bay. Rain cancels it, and strong winds may also cause cancellation in fair weather. On November 14–15, red lighting in Akishio’s control room is planned from sunset until 18:00; allow for the usual 17:30 last admission. November closures are 4, 10, 17 and 24, with the public holiday on November 3 open.
Free admission and harbour-side access
Open 10:00–18:00, last entry 17:30; Tuesday closures move after holidays, with December 29–January 3 also closed. The cafe operates 11:00–18:00, last orders 17:00, separately from exhibition areas. Walk about eight minutes from Kure Station or three from the central pier. Ordinary cars use nearby paid parking, while reception arranges the wheelchair parking spaces. Each floor has accessible toilets with changing tables.
Other stops to combine within Kure City
Kure extends from the central port to Kawajiri, Yasuura, Ondo, Kurahashi and the Tobishima islands. The links below introduce other types of city stops. For venues in different districts, allow driving or bus time as well as bridge tolls, last orders and accommodation arrival. Select parking by the area visited and its access conditions.
