The forty-seventh Tokaido post town
Seki-juku was the forty-seventh post town from Edo on the Tokaido route. More than 200 townhouses built from the late Edo period through the Meiji era remain along the road once used by feudal processions and pilgrims travelling to Ise.
The old Tokaido passes through Kizaki, Nakamachi and Shinjo. The district is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and its lattice-fronted townhouses and deep eaves line a long walkable street.
A 2.6 km model walk taking about 2.5 hours
Kameyama City’s model walk starts at the Seki-juku sightseeing car park and covers about 2.6 km in roughly 2 hours 30 minutes. It passes places such as Seki Jizo-in Temple, the former notice-board site and Hatago Tamaya History Museum before continuing along the old highway.
Each museum has its own opening days and admission arrangements. Check these before setting out if you plan to go inside, then allow time for both the exhibits and the street walk.
Follow the town’s history through museums and temples
Along the old highway are Hatago Tamaya History Museum, Seki Streetscape Museum and Seki Float Museum. Their collections cover inn life, traditional townhouses and the floats used in the local festival.
Seki Jizo-in Temple has a main hall, bell tower and Aizen Hall, all designated Important Cultural Properties. Visiting the open sites adds the town’s religious and festival history to the streetscape walk.
Walk safely and respect the living neighbourhood
Seki-juku is both a protected historic district and a residential neighbourhood. Local vehicles use its narrow streets, so watch for traffic and step aside when stopping to take photographs.
Do not look inside private homes or photograph residents without their permission. Take rubbish with you and respect the people who keep this living streetscape in use.
Combine sights, stays and dining in Kameyama
For a walk through Seki-juku on the old Tokaido, Guest Hotel Seki Lodge is an accommodation option. It generally accepts reservations for groups of 10 or more outside long holidays and holiday periods, and directs smaller parties to nearby hotels. Enjoy a local meal at Aizuya and use Seki-juku Tourist Parking when arriving by car. Explore the historic street on foot and plan transport between the town and your accommodation.
