A building inspired by a Genji firefly introduces not only fireflies but also Shimonoseki’s animals, plants, fossils and rocks. Specimen drawers and living exhibits invite close comparisons, connecting a museum visit with the rivers and woods of Toyota.

Fireflies within a wider natural landscape
Opened on June 5, 2004, the museum’s exterior takes its form from a Genji firefly. The permanent firefly section uses specimens, films and models to explain anatomy, ecology and behaviour, while the local natural-history section introduces animals, plants, fossils and rocks. Drawers of specimens and carefully explained natural objects make close comparison possible. Its scope extends beyond the firefly season to the wider landscape and wildlife of Shimonoseki.
Living exhibits and the autumn exhibition
Living exhibits include local fish, aquatic insects, crustaceans and amphibians. Outside are waterways, woodland and grassland that extend the visit to smaller creatures nearby. The September 19–December 6, 2026 autumn exhibition examines terrestrial cyanobacteria known as ishikurage and organisms that eat or live with them. This temporary exhibition occupies the paid permanent-gallery area, separate from outdoor observation and theme displays elsewhere.
Age-based admission and concessions
Adults pay ¥200 and university students ¥100, reduced to ¥160 and ¥80 for groups of twenty or more. Ages eighteen and under and pupils enrolled in high school or equivalent enter free with proof. Residents of Shimonoseki or Kitakyushu aged sixty-five or older receive half-price admission. Eligible disability certificates provide free entry, with one escort included for physical-disability grades one to four and the specified mental or developmental certificates. Accessible toilets and three accessible car spaces are available.
Reaching Toyota and planning opening days
Open 9:00–17:00, with admission ending at 16:30. Monday closures move to the following weekday after a holiday, and the museum also closes December 28–January 4. Drive about twenty minutes from Ozuki IC, twenty-five from Mine IC or forty-five from Shin-Shimonoseki Station. The bus from Ozuki Station to Toyota-cho Nishiichi takes about thirty-three minutes, followed by a three-minute walk. Three large-vehicle spaces supplement the thirty-three car spaces.
Other stops to combine within Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki extends from the station and Karato waterfront to Chofu, Kawatana, Kikugawa, Toyota and Hohoku. Allow travel time between districts and coordinate restaurant opening, accommodation arrival deadlines and attraction closures. Choose parking according to the district visited and each facility’s conditions.
