Science through mechanisms and moving balls
The first floor includes Tanken Toride, a structure of mechanisms to explore, and a large ball-course exhibit operated with handles. Watching balls rise and move provides a hands-on encounter with the relationship between position, movement and energy.
The second floor introduces science in familiar tools, a rocket cockpit and the Gulliver Land model railway. The third floor adds astronomy displays and rooms used for science and making workshops. Check the individual application conditions for scheduled classes.
Standard shows and Refretarium tickets
Museum entry is free. Standard planetarium programmes cost ¥510 for adults or ¥250 for the high-school-equivalent category and ages 65+, with preschool, elementary and junior-high visitors free. Groups with at least 30 paying viewers pay ¥410 and ¥200; reserve group visits by telephone ahead.
The high-school category includes enrolled students and people from the day after reaching age 15 through the first March 31 after reaching 18. Visitors aged 65+ show official proof of age, and students may be asked for identification. Refretarium programmes are for high-school-age visitors and older and cost ¥200.
Showtimes and same-day tickets
Tickets for all of the day’s shows are issued on the first floor from 9:00. Every planetarium visitor needs a ticket, including those admitted free. Ticket issue ends five minutes before each show, so select a programme and time before exploring the exhibits.
Outside school spring, summer and winter holidays, standard Tuesday–Friday starts are 11:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00. Weekends, public holidays and weekdays during those school breaks add 10:00 and 16:00. The programme assigned to each time varies by date; consult the show schedule.
Closing days and November 3 free admission
Hours are 9:00–17:00. Regular closures are non-holiday Mondays, the next weekday after a public holiday, and December 29–January 3. October 26, 2026 is a Monday closure. Culture Day, November 3, offers free planetarium admission, followed by closure November 4. The museum opens on holiday Monday, November 23 and closes November 24.
For standard programmes, the high-school rate is waived on Saturdays outside public holidays and school spring, summer and winter breaks. With the same exclusions, adults pay ¥250 on the second Saturday each month. May 5 offers high-school admission free and adult admission at ¥250. Specified disability certificates or medical-recipient documentation also qualify holders and attendants for exemptions.
Renovation closure planned from April 2027
Normal visits are scheduled to end after March 31, 2027, followed by temporary closure from April 1 for seismic strengthening and exhibition renewal. Reopening is planned during fiscal 2029, April 2029–March 2030. Check future announcements for the specific reopening date.
During closure, the museum plans outreach such as school and community classes, travelling displays and science shows. Venues and application details will be announced as they are decided; consult individual event notices for science activities during the renovation.
Walking from Genbaku Dome-mae
The museum stands at 5-83 Motomachi in Naka Ward, about 300 m from Genbaku Dome-mae tram stop. The museum lists routes 2 and 6 from Hiroshima Station towards that stop. Hiroshima Bus Center and stops around Kamiyacho provide other approaches.
There is no visitor car park; drivers use nearby paid parking. Allow travel time to arrive before the chosen show if combining exhibits and the planetarium. The central location also permits a city walk alongside exhibits chosen around children’s interests.
