Aomori Contemporary Art Centre (ACAC) supports artists living and working on site and presents exhibitions arising from that activity. Tadao Ando's architecture merges with the woodland setting, offering a visit centred on both art and space. Plan differently from a museum with a permanent indoor collection.

A place to encounter work made in residence
Run by Aomori Public University, ACAC centres its work on artist residencies, exhibitions and learning programmes. What visitors can see changes with the programme rather than remaining a fixed indoor collection. If viewing art is the main purpose, begin by checking the exhibition and its dates.
General hours of 09:00–19:00 differ from normal exhibition hours of 10:00–18:00. During installation periods, an open building does not guarantee an exhibition is available. Decide whether architecture or artworks are your priority, then confirm which areas are accessible through the official information or by telephone.
The 2026 EAT exhibition opens November 14
As of November 3, 2026, the EAT residency exhibition is scheduled for November 14–December 6, 10:00–18:00, with free admission and Wednesday closures. If visiting for the exhibition, plan for a date within that period, starting November 14.
The programme uses eating as a starting point for considering relationships with other living things and the environment. The exhibition presents work by three artists in the creator category. A separate public opening reception is planned for November 13, including artist talks from 15:00–16:00; advance registration is requested to assist arrangements.
Architecture shaped around the woodland
Ando's design follows the idea of 'unseen architecture', working with the uneven woodland terrain. Its main elements are a horseshoe-shaped Exhibition Hall and the linear Creative and Residential Halls. Look at walls through the trees and the contrast of curves and straight lines to appreciate the architecture itself.
The Exhibition Hall includes galleries, a lounge, water terrace and outdoor stage. The other buildings support artistic production and residency, so their rooms should not be assumed freely accessible to tourists. Respect the day's activities and the areas open to visitors.
Outdoor works depend on the season
Outdoor sculptures and works produced through residencies are scattered around the site. Ground can be muddy; winter snow may close paths or hide works. Do not assume the same routes and every artwork remain accessible through winter; check the outdoor areas available.
The centre advises staying out of the woods in strong winds because of falling branches. In unsettled weather, plan around indoor viewing and bring suitable footwear, warm layers and rain protection. Even for an outdoor-focused visit, ask at the Exhibition Hall about conditions first.
Buses and closure dates
Take a bus from Aomori Station towards Aomori Koritsu Daigaku or Moya Hills and alight at Aomori Koritsu Daigaku. The centre gives an approximate journey of 40 minutes, or around 20 minutes by taxi from Aomori Airport. Check the actual outward and return timetable for the day.
The usual year-end closure is December 29–January 3, with additional closures for university entrance examinations. Exhibition-specific closures, such as the Wednesdays during EAT, also apply. Group visits seeking a staff introduction are asked to apply about a month ahead; exhibition preparation can limit availability.
