Look closely at the stone construction
The stone-circle complex extends to roughly 55 metres across, with outer, inner and central rings among its components. A distinctive arrangement places flatter stones beside upright oval stones, a technique known as the Komakino style.
Consider the work of reshaping the slope, transporting stones and arranging them over time, as well as the scale of the monument. Read the on-site interpretation and stay within designated viewing areas; some remains are covered for protection.
The outdoor site closes from November 16
The site and neighbouring Komakino no Mori–Donguri no Ie visitor facility close for winter from November 16 to April 30. During the open period from October onward, visiting ends at 16:00, so plan an early visit in the first half of November.
The operator states that the closure following a bear sighting in May 2026 ended on June 25 after an electric fence was installed. Before travelling, check current visiting arrangements and weather-related changes, and follow fences and notices at the site.
The separate museum offers an indoor visit
Komakino Museum occupies the former Nozawa Elementary School at 108-3 Sawabe, Nozawa. Admission is free, hours are 09:00–17:00 and the regular closure is December 29–January 3. The outdoor site’s winter closure does not apply to this museum.
Displays explore everyday life through pottery and stone tools, ritual and burial, and a model of the site. In the outdoor visiting season, seeing the objects first can help connect the stone arrangements with the people who made them.
Plan separately for the two locations
The site is about five minutes by car or 25 minutes on foot from the museum. The operator gives approximate driving times of 30 minutes from Aomori or Shin-Aomori stations and 15 minutes from Aomori Airport. Check whether your map destination is the museum or archaeological site.
For city buses, check services from Furukawa towards Nyunai or Oyanabe and the return timetable in advance. Allow for walking beyond the bus stop instead of planning only around the bus journey, and wear suitable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing.
Parking and practical preparation
The site has about ten free spaces for ordinary vehicles. Large-bus parking at both locations requires advance booking, and vehicle restrictions apply on the approach to the archaeological site. Groups should confirm the vehicle type and party size with the museum.
Donguri no Ie has a rest hall and toilets but shares the site’s winter closure. The museum lists a stair lift, a wheelchair on the second floor and a nursing room. Visitors with mobility or assistance needs can discuss the specific areas they wish to use before travelling.
