Visit the twenty-second temple in the hills
The temple belongs to Koyasan Shingon Buddhism and enshrines Yakushi Nyorai. Tradition dates its founding by Kobo Daishi Kukai to 814; the names Byodoji and Hakusuizan relate to its foundation story and well. The well remains known as Kobo’s sacred water. Explore these traditions around the grounds before joining the ordinary flow of worship at the main hall.
Distinguish hall and stamp-office times
The main hall opens 06:00–17:00 and the stamp office 08:00–17:00. The gate and grounds remain open, while ordinary hall visits finish at 17:00; evening services may be attended beyond that time. Ordinary visits require no reservation and both admission and parking are free. For stamps or devotional items, plan around the office’s 08:00 start rather than the hall’s earlier opening.
Stamps and the stepped approach
Stamps record a visit through calligraphy and seals: ¥500 in a book, ¥700 on a hanging scroll or ¥300 on a white robe. Image cards are ¥200 colour or ¥100 monochrome. The route has thirteen steps before the gate, five beyond and fifty-three before the hall. Those unable to climb can connect with worship through the five-coloured cord extending from the main image towards the gate.
Station access and group arrangements
Aratano Station is about two kilometres/thirty minutes on foot or seven minutes by taxi. Tokushima-Tsuda IC is around 30.7 kilometres/sixty minutes by car. Cars and pilgrimage buses park free, while groups of twenty or more must contact the temple ahead. Temple lodging is closed with no reopening planned; select accommodation separately when continuing through Aratano or to the next pilgrimage stop.
