A pond, historic rooms, a tea house and scattered storehouses form this garden beneath a wooded hill. It adds a gentle outdoor walk and small exhibitions to a visit to the old castle town of Chofu. Look beyond the pond towards waterfalls, planting and wooded paths for changing perspectives.

The pond and wooded grounds of a former estate
Opened in May 1993, the garden occupies the former estate of Nishi Yukinaga, a senior retainer of the Chofu Mori domain. Around 31,000 square metres extend from a central pond towards a wooded hill, with historic rooms, a tea house and a pavilion. Pond-side scenery, small waterfalls, flowers and stone figures in the woods offer different points of interest. After exploring Chofu’s streets, allow time to look at the buildings and follow paths through the grounds rather than viewing only the entrance.
Storehouse displays and seasonal flowers
The second storehouse displays material on Shimonoseki and whaling. The third hosts exhibitions, while the first storehouse’s upper floor offers displays and sales of handmade work. Its ground-floor shop ended operation on September 27, 2026. Seasonal planting includes camellias, plum and azaleas, followed by irises and hydrangeas, summer water lilies and Sun Yat-sen lotus, then autumn foliage and sasanqua. Moving between indoor displays and paths around the water provides different views of the same garden.
Admission and reservable historic rooms
Admission is ¥210 for adults and ¥100 for primary and junior-high pupils, reduced to ¥160 and ¥80 for groups of at least twenty. Residents of Shimonoseki or Kitakyushu aged sixty-five or older pay ¥100 with proof. Disability-certificate exemptions have defined escort conditions, including one companion for physical-disability grades one to four. Reservable fifteen-mat rooms cost ¥940 for 9:00–12:00 or ¥1,270 for 13:00–17:00; eight-mat rooms cost ¥490 or ¥670. Admission is additional. Food and non-alcoholic drinks are permitted in these rooms, but alcohol is not.
A one-minute bus approach and free parking
Open 9:00–17:00 with last entry at 16:30; closed December 28–January 4. From Shimonoseki Station, a bus along the national-road route takes around twenty minutes to Shiritsu Bijutsukan, followed by a one-minute walk. Driving from Shimonoseki IC via the Dannoura direction takes around twenty minutes, with 235 free parking spaces. Wheelchair-accessible slopes and toilets and loan wheelchairs support visits. Allow walking time before the admission deadline when combining garden displays and seasonal planting with other daytime stops in Chofu.
Other stops to combine within Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki extends from the station and Karato waterfront to Chofu, Kawatana, Kikugawa, Toyota and Hohoku. Allow travel time between districts and coordinate restaurant opening, accommodation arrival deadlines and attraction closures. Choose parking according to the district visited and each facility’s conditions.
