Koreyoshi Takatori’s home and its heritage
The house belonged to Koreyoshi Takatori, who lived from 1850 to 1927 and prospered through ventures including Kishima coal mine. Preserved as the Former Takatori Family Residence, a National Important Cultural Property, it combines a predominantly Japanese design with a Western room in the residential wing. Its different spaces reveal cultural influences within a modern Japanese home.
A Noh stage, painted doors and transoms
The large hall incorporates a Noh stage, creating an unusual arrangement for a home. Painted cedar doors, carved transoms and distinctive lighting reward a closer look at the fittings. Move from the overall rooms to the details of painting and woodwork to appreciate the house and its craftsmanship. Group use can restrict photography in part of the garden.
Individual and group admission
Admission is ¥520 for adults, ¥260 for elementary and junior-high pupils and free for preschool children. Groups of twenty or more pay ¥410 and ¥200. The house opens 9:30–17:00, with entry until 16:30. Monday closure moves to the following day when Monday is a holiday. The normal New Year closure is December 29–January 3, with occasional special opening arrangements.
Walking from Karatsu Station and visitor parking
Walk about twenty minutes from JR Karatsu Station, or take a roughly ten-minute bus ride to Jonai Ninomon and walk five minutes. The residence lot accommodates 88 cars and five large vehicles. Bring the parking ticket to reception to receive one hour free with admission. Allow separately for any longer parking while continuing into the town.
Other stops to combine within Karatsu
In central Karatsu, combine the Former Takatori Residence with Nakamachi shops on foot. Coordinate hotel meals, restaurant closing days and evening booking requirements with daytime and nighttime parking tariffs. Trips to Yobuko/Chinzei, Hamatama/Nanayama or Ouchi/Kyuragi need additional driving or bus time beyond central walks.
