The Memorial Museum for Soldiers, Detainees in Siberia, and Postwar Repatriates is a free museum on the 33rd floor of Shinjuku Sumitomo Building.
Three perspectives on war and its aftermath
The permanent displays are organised around soldiers, postwar detention, and repatriation from overseas. Objects used at the time, graphic displays, films and dioramas introduce these experiences to generations without direct memories of the war.
The soldiers’ section introduces objects such as call-up papers, military service booklets and comfort bags. Viewed alongside detention and repatriation displays, these materials show how hardship continued after the fighting ended. Individual objects may be rotated or unavailable; follow current display notices.
Audio guides and testimony events
The official FAQ suggests roughly 30–60 minutes for an independent visit, or 60–90 minutes with commentary. Free Japanese and English audio guides are listed; ask at reception if you would like one. Your visit may take longer or shorter depending on your interests and conditions.
Testimony sessions and film screenings follow separate schedules. Check the event and participation conditions if you want to attend a particular programme. Arranging group commentary or a testimony session requires consultation separate from an ordinary self-guided visit.
Free entry and forthcoming closure dates
Hours are 09:30–17:30, with entry by 17:00 and no admission charge. Monday is the usual closed day, but public holiday shifts, summer exceptions and building-wide closures mean you should check the calendar for your date.
The calendar checked on October 23, 2026 lists New Year closure from December 28, 2026 through January 4, 2027, and a Shinjuku Sumitomo Building closure on February 7, 2027. Use these dates when planning rather than assuming the shorter December 29–January 3 pattern. Schedules can change.
Access from Tocho-mae and visitor rules
Allow about one minute from Tocho-mae exit A6, five minutes from Nishi-Shinjuku, or ten minutes from Shinjuku Station West Exit. The museum is on the 33rd floor, so leave time to enter the building and reach the museum. There is no dedicated museum car park.
Eating and drinking, including gum and sweets, are prohibited. Photography is generally permitted with restrictions on prohibited exhibits, flash, tripods and selfie sticks. Large bags should be placed in lockers or left at reception, subject to the staff’s instructions.
