Bookshelves, reading and music spaces
The Staircase Bookshelf extends between the basement and first floor. The basement includes a lounge, cafe and a recreation of Murakami’s study. The official guide states that visitors cannot enter the recreated study and that some furnishings differ from the original.
The first floor has a gallery lounge introducing editions and languages of Murakami’s work, plus an audio room. The second floor hosts exhibitions, but the recording studio is not open to the public. Follow the visiting limits for each space.
Autumn 2026 exhibitions and planned closures
As checked on October 23, 2026, “The World Seen Through Miss Saigon” runs May 1–November 8 across two venues: the House of Literature and Waseda University History Museum. Check each venue’s opening conditions if visiting both.
A planned exhibition on special editions of What I Talk About When I Talk About Running is listed for November 19–May 23, 2027. Its notice includes closures December 21–January 13 and February 1–March 2. The exhibition period does not mean the building is open every day; check the calendar for your visit.
Public visits, group bookings and research access
General entry is free, with no booking required for up to 20 people. Groups of 21 or more should apply through the group form at least one week ahead and wait for staff to confirm availability. Submission alone does not secure a booking, and large groups may be asked to split up.
The third-floor research stacks are separate from public visiting. Eligibility expanded in April 2026 to specified Waseda staff, graduate and undergraduate students, and designated library card holders. Members of other research institutions should enquire in advance. Usual hours are Monday, Tuesday and Friday 13:00–17:00, with entry services ending at 16:45 and capacity limited to six.
Getting there and photography rules
Allow about seven minutes from Waseda Station exits 3a/3b on the Tozai Line, or five minutes from the Waseda tram stop. From Takadanobaba, Toei bus Gaku-02 to Sodai Seimon leaves about a two-minute walk. The hall is about one minute from the campus East Gate. Public access here does not grant access to other university libraries or research rooms.
There is no car park or locker facility. Photographs are permitted, but video and close-ups of books are not. Weather warnings can trigger sudden closure, so check the visitor information before setting out.
