Choosing between Hakone-yama and Okubo
The Hakone-yama area has varied terrain around the hill, with flower, adventure play and stream-side spaces. The Okubo area has lawns, children’s spaces and Yakudo Plaza for walking and relaxation. Shinjuku Sports Center is also in the Okubo area, but use of its indoor facilities has separate conditions from free park entry.
Decide which area you want before travelling. A trip to the hill and a visit to the Okubo lawns can call for different stations and entrances.
Hakone-yama and the former estate garden
The Hakone-yama area was once part of Toyama-so, a secondary estate of the Owari Tokugawa family. Its artificial garden hill survives as Hakone-yama. Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association describes it as the highest hill inside the Yamanote Line, at an elevation of 44.6 metres. This is an urban garden hill in Shinjuku.
The park service center issues certificates for visitors who reach the hilltop. The park being always open does not mean the service desk is always staffed. Check the day’s desk hours and New Year closure before visiting for a certificate.
Construction and facility-specific conditions
The official notice dated September 16, 2026 schedules park improvements from mid-October 2026 through late March 2027, with work hours of 08:30–17:00. Its plan concerns paths and other locations in the Hakone-yama area, rather than a closure of the entire park. Construction zones and available paths are marked separately. Follow current signs and detours during your visit; the completion date is provisional.
Always-open park grounds do not mean every facility, including the paddling pool, operates year-round. Check the current season’s dates and cancellation notices for water play or events. Dogs should be kept on a lead, and owners should take waste home.
Station access for each area and parking
The Okubo area is about ten minutes on foot from JR Shin-Okubo or Takadanobaba, or six minutes from Nishi-Waseda. The Hakone-yama area is about eight minutes from Nishi-Waseda, ten from Waseda on the Tozai Line, or fifteen from Wakamatsu-Kawada. From Shin-Okubo or Takadanobaba, allow about 25 minutes for Hakone-yama.
The park has no car park. Use public transport, and consult the operator’s accessibility map or service center if walking distances or slopes are a concern. Nearby facilities’ parking should not be assumed available for park visits.
