Saeki’s Japanese studio in Ochiai
Saeki built a home with a studio here in 1921. Across the years before his first stay in France and after his return, he spent a little over four years at this site. The ward identifies it as his only Japanese studio base and the place associated with his Shimo-Ochiai Landscape series. It offers a perspective on his work beyond Paris.
The grounds also form the municipal Saeki Park. Visiting the atelier interior is subject to the memorial hall’s opening conditions, so allow time before it closes.
Discovering the artist through his studio and panels
The visit centres on the conserved Taisho-period studio and displays about Saeki’s life and work in Ochiai. The ward specifically states that original artworks are not exhibited. For a visit focused on original paintings, check the current displays at the relevant collecting museum or exhibition.
As checked on October 23, 2026, the mini gallery lists “Matsumoto Shunsuke’s Zakkicho” for October 1–December 27. This free display is linked to a special exhibition at Shinjuku Historical Museum. The Monday closure rule and 16:00 closing time apply during its run.
Seasonal closing times and commentary
The hall closes at 16:30 from May through September and 16:00 from October through April. Its hours differ from Nakamura Tsune Atelier Memorial Hall, so allow for the difference when visiting more than one site. If Monday is a public holiday, closure moves to the following weekday.
Volunteer commentary is listed for open weekends and public holidays, 10:00–16:00, except in February and August. Ask Shinjuku Historical Museum about specific dates or group explanations; commentary is not guaranteed on arrival.
Access from Shimo-Ochiai or Mejiro and car visits
Allow about ten minutes from Shimo-Ochiai Station or twenty from Mejiro. The hall is about five minutes from Seibo Byoin Iriguchi bus stop, or two minutes from Kanto Bus’s Seibo Byoin-mae stop. These similarly named stops are different, so check your route and stop.
The operator says car visits are not permitted. Do not assume general or accessible parking is available; contact the hall in advance about any access needs.
