Art beside Shukkeien Garden
The collection focuses on art connected with Hiroshima, Japanese and Asian craft, and art of the 1920s–30s. More than 5,200 works are introduced through roughly four collection rotations a year. Moving between paintings and craft offers perspectives on both regional and international expression.
The lobby and rest areas look towards neighbouring Shukkeien. Art viewing can lead into a garden walk, pairing time indoors with the season outside. If visiting for a particular collection work, check the object list for your date.
Kumi Sugai through December 6
The special exhibition marking 30 years since Kumi Sugai’s death occupies the third-floor galleries from October 2 to December 6, 2026. It traces his early to late work, including works shown in Japan for the first time and his Porsche. Poster displays rotate after November 8, with the later selection from November 9.
Same-day prices are ¥1,500 for adults, ¥1,000 for high-school or university students and ¥700 for elementary or junior-high pupils. Groups of 20 or more receive ¥200 off each ticket. Show student identification when buying and using a student ticket. The special-exhibition ticket also includes the concurrent collection display.
Sasaki’s mountains and avant-garde art
The third collection rotation runs October 17, 2026–January 17, 2027 on the second floor. It presents Kunihiko Sasaki’s mountain paintings and writings, alongside prewar and postwar avant-garde art connected with the Sugai exhibition. Landscape forms and words offer a different route into the art from the special exhibition.
The second-floor collection galleries close for display changeover on November 30, 2026. The Sugai exhibition is scheduled to remain open daily through December 6, allowing a third-floor visit on that second-floor closure date.
Collection concessions and November 3
Collection-only admission is ¥510 for adults or ¥310 for university students, reduced to ¥410 and ¥250 for groups of 20 or more. High-school pupils and younger visitors and ages 65+ enter free; older visitors show official proof of age. Holders of specified disability certificates and one carer also qualify for the collection exemption.
Collection admission is free on Culture Day, November 3. The Sugai exhibition has its own ticket prices; eligible disability-certificate holders and up to one carer receive half-price same-day admission. The garden-and-collection combination ticket costs ¥660 for adults or ¥350 for university students.
Friday evenings and Monday openings
Normal hours are 9:00–17:00. Fridays from September 24, 2026 to March 31, 2027 extend to 19:00, with entry ending 30 minutes before closing. Friday evenings offer an option after work or daytime sightseeing; arrive before the last-entry cutoff.
Regular closures are Mondays, exhibition changeovers and December 25–January 1. The Sugai exhibition’s October 2–December 6 daily-opening schedule includes October 26 and holiday Monday, November 23. Check the applicable exhibition calendar for visits after that show ends.
Trams and underground-parking limits
Travel from Hiroshima Station to Hatchobori and change to the Hakushima tram line for Shukkeien-mae. The sightseeing loop bus also serves Kenritsu Bijutsukan-mae (Shukkeien-mae). Adjacent Shukkeien is readily combined on foot.
The 45-space underground lot accepts vehicles up to 4.7 m long, 1.7 m wide and 1.7 m high. Charges are ¥400 for the first hour and ¥200 per additional 30 minutes. There is no bus parking. Spending at least ¥1,000 in the museum shop, restaurant or tea room qualifies for 30 minutes free parking when the receipt and parking ticket are shown at first-floor reception.
