Everyday tools and local culture are displayed in a faceted building that fits the surrounding hills. Handmade objects and photographs connect visitors with Toyoura’s past, adding local history to a walk around Kawatana Onsen.

A collection shaped by everyday life
The museum sits within Kawatana no Mori, the city’s hot-spring exchange centre. Its collection encourages attention to the materials, uses and functions of tools associated with everyday life. Local objects introduced by the centre include tai-guruma toy fish carts, Kawatana-patterned roof tiles, ink-line tools and tobacco trays. Their craftsmanship and practical roles connect the galleries with the buildings and everyday surroundings of the hot-spring town.
Toyoura remembered through photographs
The free Memories of Toyoura exhibition occupies the small gallery June 20–October 25, 2026. Around one hundred photographs from early Showa through about 1985 form a twenty-minute slideshow. Tourism posters, municipal-merger souvenirs and recordings of town songs add context to changes in landscape and daily life. Seats allow time to follow the changing photographs rather than treating the display as a brief walk past static objects.
Kengo Kuma’s architecture and a partial closure
Designed by Kengo Kuma and Associates, Kawatana no Mori uses faceted forms that relate to the surrounding hills. The museum shares the centre with Cortot Hall and exchange rooms; gallery visits and hall events have different arrangements. Ordinary museum entry is free, 9:00–19:00 with admission until 18:30. Gallery 1, the small room, closes for changeover October 26–30, 2026, while Gallery 2 remains open. The museum closes December 31–January 3.
A walk from the hot-spring town
Walk about five minutes from Kawatana Onsen bus stop or drive three minutes from the station. The centre is around twenty minutes from Ozuki IC, thirty from Shimonoseki IC or twenty-five from Shin-Shimonoseki Station. Ten parking spaces are shared with Kawatana no Mori and can be busy during events. The museum and exchange centre occupy the same building, fitting between hot-spring bathing, a meal and a town walk. Room hire requires a separate application and is distinct from ordinary gallery admission.
Other stops to combine within Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki extends from the station and Karato waterfront to Chofu, Kawatana, Kikugawa, Toyota and Hohoku. Allow travel time between districts and coordinate restaurant opening, accommodation arrival deadlines and attraction closures. Choose parking according to the district visited and each facility’s conditions.
