Nine gardens on the former residence layout
Opened on April 29, 1992 to commemorate the city centenary, the roughly 33,000-square-metre site preserves the layout of the west residence built by Honda Tadamasa in 1618 and neighbouring plots and lanes. Its nine spaces include a pond-centred residence garden and a tea garden. Gates and walls divide the scenes, while greenery around the castle’s west enclosure forms a borrowed backdrop to water, covered passages and residence gates.
Admission and the under-18 category
Individual adult admission is ¥400, or ¥320 in groups of thirty or more. The free under-18 category also includes visitors who have turned eighteen but have not yet reached the following March 31. A combined castle ticket costs ¥2,600. Eligible Himeji residents aged sixty-five+ receive free entry with the specified card; disability-certificate holders and one carer qualify on presentation. Garden hours are 09:00–17:00, last entry 16:30, closing December 29–30.
Checking Sojuan and Kassuiken arrangements
The garden includes Sojuan teahouse and Kassuiken restaurant. The operator currently announces emergency maintenance of its website, directing important updates to departmental social accounts. Before using these services, contact Kokoen on 079-289-4120 to confirm prices, reception times, reservations and temporary closures. Normal garden opening hours do not guarantee that tea or meals are available. Website maintenance does not itself indicate a garden closure.
The western entrance and garden paths
Walk around fifteen minutes from Himeji Station or five from Himejijo-Otemon-mae bus stop. The garden gate is west of the castle and separate from its paid precinct. Otemon paid parking is nearby. Wheelchairs are loaned free for garden use, with an accompanying helper recommended for the small changes in level. Eating brought-in food or drinking alcohol is prohibited. Pets must remain entirely enclosed in a carrier, including the head.
