This literary museum occupies the lodgings used by the young Doppo while teaching in Saiki. Read about his writing, enter the upstairs rooms where he lived and view a garden shaped by Shiroyama’s slope. A visit along the History and Literature Road connects the physical town with the landscapes of his works.

Lodgings from Doppo’s time as a teacher
Doppo arrived in 1893 to teach at Tsuruya Gakkan and lodged with his younger brother in the director Sakamoto’s home. The low-ceilinged upstairs rooms bring his daily surroundings into focus. He repeatedly walked Shiroyama and described it in his diary. His Saiki experiences later informed works including Haru no Tori, Gen Oji and Shikagari.
House displays and the digital library
The house’s ground floor presents photographs of Meiji-era Saiki, video scenes inspired by the writing and temporary displays, with a former living room used for resting. The storehouse covers his life, literary characteristics and letters; upstairs are reading materials and early editions. Its digital library adds images and audio, bringing together the historic rooms and the works themselves.
A spring-fed garden beneath Shiroyama
The rear garden follows the terrain at Shiroyama’s foot and predates the museum. A pond fed by hillside seepage and mature trees preserve the atmosphere of a samurai residence. Visit both floors of the house and storehouse before continuing to the garden. When combining the museum with a walk on the hill, allow for the 16:30 last-admission time.
A joint ticket and castle-town access
Adults pay ¥200 and school pupils ¥100; preschool children enter free. Groups of fifteen+ pay ¥100/¥50. Local pupils and holders of the specified disability certificates with one companion enter free. The one-year three-museum ticket costs ¥500/¥150. Walk around twenty minutes from Saiki Station, take a five-minute taxi ride or drive fifteen minutes from Saiki IC. Free Otemachi parking occupies the former cultural-hall parking area.
