Understand the castle and its town
Opened in May 2015, the museum covers the region from medieval times to the early Meiji period. Themes include the Saeki family and Togamure Castle, the establishment of the domain under Takamasa Mori, construction of Saiki Castle and its town, and opposing forces in the Satsuma Rebellion. Visit before or after walking the historic streets.
The former domain office and Mori residence
The site served as the domain’s administrative offices during the Edo period and the former lord’s residence in the Meiji era. Outdoor features include the old office gate and surviving rooms from the Mori residence. Alongside museum objects, these structures reveal how the site functioned within the town. Combine the visit with a walk beneath Shiroyama.
An exhibition on learning in Edo-period Saiki
From October 17–December 13, a special exhibition traces Edo-period education from the domain school to ordinary people’s learning, using textbooks, martial-arts books and literary and art publications. November 14 has extended opening until 21:00, with a roughly thirty-minute concert at 19:00 and an hour-long gallery explanation from 19:30.
