Cameras within architecture of light and shadow
Opened in September 2000, this museum was designed by Tadao Ando. Open volumes and substantial concrete walls create changing light and shadow, making the architecture part of the visit. Selections from roughly four thousand camera-related collection items appear in themed displays, with glass cases allowing views of their shapes, materials and mechanisms from different directions.
Family photographs and the Leica display
Masashi Asada’s commemorative photography exhibition runs September 5–November 8, 2026. It revisits the Asada family series, later family photographs and two new works made in Toyama. The concurrent Leica and Leica-style Cameras collection display, also ending November 8, introduces sixteen Leica cameras and related designs from different countries, included in the photo-exhibition ticket.
Exhibition prices and photography conditions
For this exhibition, adults pay ¥800 and high-school/university students ¥400; younger pupils enter free. High-school students are free on weekends/holidays, and ages sixty-five-plus pay ¥640 with ID. Toyama-resident grandparents visiting with grandchildren enter free; discounts cannot be combined. Follow each display’s photography policy. Even where photography is allowed, individual-work shots, video, tripods, selfie sticks and commercial use are prohibited.
Closing days and reaching Fukuoka-machi
Open 9:00–17:00, last entry 16:30. Closed Mondays or the next weekday after a holiday, December 29–January 3, and during some exhibition changes. Walk about six minutes from Ainokaze Toyama Railway Fukuoka Station or drive about ten minutes from Fukuoka Interchange. East and west lots total about thirty free spaces. When busy, designated overflow parking at U Hall and Sakura Stadium is available, with consideration for their events.
Other stops to combine within Takaoka
Allow travel between the Fukuoka camera museum and Ferver when combining a visit and meal. Manten is by Takaoka Station, while Shin-Takaoka parking serves the Shinkansen station, with a rail or other transfer between them. Match the museum’s Monday closure/16:30 last entry, the restaurant’s Tuesday closure and trains when linking Fukuoka-machi with the station areas.
