A residence built for the founder's parents
Nakajima Aircraft founder Nakajima Chikuhei commissioned the residence for his parents near the family's former home in Oshikiri. The site exceeds ten thousand square metres and contains a main house, storehouses, main gate, gatehouse and family shrine. The main house's frame was raised in 1930 and the gatehouse's in 1931; Ito Toichi, formerly of the imperial architectural bureau, supervised the main building. The property became a national Important Cultural Property on July 25, 2016.
From the entrance to reception rooms and garden
Corridors connect entrance, guest, residential and dining wings around an inner courtyard. Only part of the house is open through the community centre. Highlights include the substantial entrance canopy, stained glass, chandeliers and the broad garden to the south. That front garden covers roughly three thousand square metres and forms an important view from the rooms. A visit focuses on the accessible architectural details, without entry into closed wings or the upper floor.
Conservation surveys and public access
Part of the residence has operated as a public community centre since June 14, 2014. Surveys are now underway for conservation repairs planned from fiscal 2027. Protective shutters are installed when a typhoon is forecast or develops. Admission remains free under the published opening arrangements, alongside these conservation measures. The surviving fittings, decoration and site layout show both the scale of a large modern Japanese residence and the work involved in preserving it.
Hours and access in the Ojima area
Open 9:00–17:00, entry until 16:30. Closed Mondays, the following day after a Monday holiday, and December 29–January 3. Taxi journeys take around fifteen minutes from Ota, twenty-five from Kagohara or thirty from Kumagaya; forty parking spaces are available. The municipal west-route bus stops immediately outside at Kyu-Nakajimake-Jutaku, while Bizenjima-Iriguchi on the Ojima route is about eighteen minutes away on foot. These bus services are listed as suspended on weekends, holidays and over New Year.
