Regional models reveal the city’s variety
Permanent displays combine six regional themes with a chronological history. Reconstructed models explain communities shaped by Katata’s water transport and fishing, Sakamoto’s temple setting, Otsu’s port and post town, Zeze’s castle town and the Omi Otsu Palace. Comparing them provides a useful introduction to a trip across several districts.
From prehistory to modern Otsu
The timeline covers material from Ishiyama shell-mound finds through medieval pilgrimage to modern steamships and railways. Permanent admission is ¥330 adults, ¥240 high-school/university students or ¥160 younger school pupils; groups of fifteen+ pay ¥260/¥190/¥130. Mini exhibitions are included. Most permanent displays allow photography, while special exhibitions set their own rules.
The autumn 2026 Otsu treasures exhibition
The exhibition Passing Otsu’s Treasures to the Future runs October 10–November 23, 2026, exploring around sixty years of municipal cultural-property protection and recent discoveries. Admission is ¥800/¥400/¥200 for adults, older students and younger school pupils, including permanent displays. The second selection is planned November 3–23. The museum closes November 2, 4, 9 and 16, so distinguish the second-phase opening day from the following day. Groups of fifteen+ and eligible city residents pay ¥640/¥320/¥160, with proof required for resident concessions.
Five minutes from the city-hall station and shared parking
Walk five minutes from Keihan Otsu-shiyakusho-mae or fifteen from JR Otsukyo. Around sixty free parking spaces are shared with the civic culture hall and restricted to facility users. Large vehicles require advance reservations because there are no dedicated spaces. A wheelchair route runs from the north car park via an elevator and connecting passage. Open 09:00–17:00, last gallery entry 16:30; the New Year closure is December 27–January 5.
