Permanent displays on the Black Ships and Shimoda
Permanent displays cover Shimoda’s drum festival, Yoshida Shoin’s attempted overseas voyage, Perry’s arrival, exchanges with Russia and the first US consul general, Townsend Harris. Objects and documents explain how the town changed from a maritime checkpoint to an open port. Learning about the people and events helps place the harbour and temple sites in context.
Anniversary exhibitions on The Izu Dancer and Harris
From July 18, 2026 through March 14, 2027, the museum schedules exhibitions marking the publication centenary of The Izu Dancer and 170 years since Harris arrived in Shimoda. They introduce Kawabata Yasunari’s Izu journey, the story’s settings and film adaptations, alongside Harris’s life. Combined with the permanent collection, they offer literary and diplomatic perspectives on the region.
Admission, reception and internal stairs
General admission is ¥1,200 for senior-high pupils and older visitors or ¥700 for elementary/junior-high pupils; the student-ID rate is ¥1,000. Opening is 9:00–17:00 with last admission at 16:30, normally daily. Allow thirty to forty minutes. The route covers two buildings, with stairs needed for the upper floors. Photography is generally allowed except for items marked otherwise.
Arrive on foot or by bus and visit Zushuan
The museum is about ten minutes on foot or three minutes by car from Izukyu-Shimoda Station. The aquarium bus from stop seven serves the Shimoda Kaikoku Hakubutsukan stop. Free visitor parking is beside the buildings. Zushuan, the local-product and sake shop on the ground floor of building two, also has an outside entrance and serves drinks. It does not serve meals, so combine the museum with a meal elsewhere in town.
Other stops to combine within Shimoda
Combine the museum with lunch at station-area Ishizuka, then travel to Shimoda Central Hotel in Aitama. Watanabe is a reserved station-area lot, separate from the museum’s free parking. Book the hotel shuttle at 14:00, 15:00, 16:00 or 17:00 and coordinate the visit and transfer.
