Restored National Treasure buildings
The main hall and the Ohiroma reception hall with Shikidai entrance were designated National Treasures in December 2022. Ten other buildings are Important Cultural Properties. A twenty-three-year conservation project, from fiscal 1998 through 2020, restored this group of historic structures. Their broad roofs and timber interiors reveal the different functions of the main hall and reception buildings.
Manyoshu associations and seven mysteries
The grounds are believed to occupy the site of the ancient Etchu provincial headquarters and contain Manyoshu poem monuments associated with Otomo no Yakamochi. Temple traditions include a stone said to have fallen from the sky, a fruitless ginkgo and a pond said never to dry. Amanojaku figures supporting the main hall’s roof have different arm positions at the front and rear. Explore the architecture alongside its folklore.
Admission, guides and seasonal access
Admission contributions are ¥500/adult, ¥200/secondary pupil and ¥100/primary pupil, or ¥400/¥150/¥70 for groups of twenty or more. Audio guides cost an additional ¥500. Volunteer guides require booking three days ahead, with one guide per twenty visitors costing ¥1,000 for up to sixty minutes or ¥2,000 for longer. Visits stop November 13–17, 2026. December 29–January 4 opens only the main hall and grounds, free; reception buildings remain closed.
Winter deadlines and the Fushiki approach
Open 9:00–16:30 March–November, last entry 16:00; 9:00–16:00 December–February, last entry 15:30. Walk about five minutes from Fushiki Station or drive about fifteen minutes from Takaoka-kita Interchange. Cars can use the free station-front tourism or Shokoji North car park. Part of the station-front lot is unavailable because of nearby works. Coaches use the dedicated lot near the station, about seven minutes on foot. Pets cannot accompany visitors.
Other stops to combine within Takaoka
In Fushiki, combine Shokoji with port-town walks. Meiwasou lies on the Amaharashi shore and Nicoca in Kanaya, requiring travel by car or public transport for the stay and reserved meal. Coordinate partial station-parking works, its 16:30 closure, temple last entry and dinner reservations when linking coast and town.
