Maniden and the twenty-seventh pilgrimage temple
Founded by Shoku in 966, the temple is number twenty-seven on the Saikoku thirty-three-temple pilgrimage. Kannon figures line the approach through Niomon to Maniden. The temple describes the roughly one-kilometre walk from the upper ropeway station as fifteen–twenty minutes. Ascending paths and steps are part of the route through woodland and temple buildings.
The three halls of Daikodo, Jikido and Jogyodo
Beyond Maniden stands the grouping of Daikodo, Jikido and Jogyodo. Important Cultural Property buildings such as Daikodo and Jikido are joined by further structures around the inner precinct, including Kaisando, Gohodo and the Honda family mausolea. Covering several areas adds walking: the ropeway operator suggests around two hours for a visit including the three halls. Allow time for the forest paths between them.
Temple entry and the mountain shuttle
Temple entry requires a donation of ¥800 for secondary-school pupils and older, ¥500 for primary pupils, with preschoolers free. An additional ¥500 includes return minibus travel between the donation point and below Maniden. Scheduled final shuttles from October 11 through February end are 15:55 uphill and 16:05 back. Return ropeway fares are ¥1,200 adults or ¥600 children, paid separately from temple entry.
Reaching the lower station and the 2027 works
From Himeji Station, take the Shinki bus toward Shosha Ropeway for about thirty minutes, then the roughly four-minute ropeway ascent. Free parking serves ropeway passengers at the lower station. Between October 11 and November 30, the last descent is 17:00 Monday–Saturday or 18:00 Sundays/holidays. The ropeway is scheduled to suspend operation for inspection and major works February 5–October 28, 2027, removing this usual means of ascent.
