Overlooking Motonoma Strait between the Tsurumisaki Peninsula and Oshima, this former battery preserves an inclined tunnel, a huge gun pit and traces of a 1942 accident. The visit combines a coastal viewpoint with wartime remains. Public visits resumed on July 2, 2026 after repairs to the protective dome.

Ascend the former ammunition incline
A roughly three-minute lift ride follows an incline once used by an ammunition conveyor. The tunnel is about eighty meters long, with a maximum forty-five-degree slope and 162 granite steps. Moving through it reveals the structure of an underground military installation. The route continues between the incline, the gun pit and a spiral staircase, involving changes of level.
Scars in a ten-meter-wide gun pit
The gun pit is about ten meters across and 12.8 meters deep. Its reinforced-concrete walls, at least two meters thick, still bear explosion damage. Two thirty-centimeter guns from the cruiser Ibuki were installed for coastal defense. A protective dome now covers the remains, while a central spiral stair provides views of the pit’s interior and scars.
The accident and its memorials
On January 11, 1942, the final shot during firing practice exploded inside a barrel, killing sixteen people. A memorial names the victims; the nearby Peace Tower records 465 war dead from the former Tsurumi town. Beyond the engineering scale, these monuments place the site in its human context. Outdoor viewpoints look toward Oshima, Saiki Bay and the Bungo Channel.
Opening days and the peninsula drive
Open 09:30–16:30, admission is ¥200 for adults and ¥100 for primary/junior-high pupils. Tuesday and Wednesday closures shift to the following day when a holiday; December 29–January 3 is also closed. Parking accommodates thirty cars and five large buses and has toilets. Allow about an hour by car from Saiki Station or an hour and five minutes from Saiki IC when combining the visit with the city center.
