A museum on a former barracks site
Opened in 1997 on former naval-air-unit barracks grounds, the museum explains Saiki’s military role. Fleets gathered for exercises from the late Meiji era, and a naval air unit was established in 1934. Photographs, records and belongings place the base within the town’s history and invite reflection on its relationship with civilian life.
Letters and objects of daily life
The ground floor focuses on local life before, during and after the war. Protective stitched belts, letters sent home and ceramic food containers show its effects on daily routines. The hall includes sea-mine remains and wheels from a Type 93 trainer aircraft. Filmed testimony adds personal experiences to the physical objects.
The air unit upstairs and remains outdoors
Upstairs displays cover the naval air unit, uniforms, equipment and Saiki’s connection with the Pearl Harbor attack. Outside are aircraft remains and original unit gateposts relocated from beside Route 388. Moving between the indoor accounts and surviving outdoor objects places these traces of war within the physical town.
The joint ticket and admission exemptions
Adults pay ¥300 and school pupils ¥100; preschool children enter free. Groups fifteen+ pay ¥200/¥50. Local pupils and holders of specified disability certificates with one companion enter free. The ¥500/¥150 joint ticket covers one visit each here, the historical museum and Doppo house within a year. Closed Mondays, next day when a holiday, and December 29–January 3. Parking has twenty car spaces; large buses require arrangements.
