Toyo Sekishokan introduces the bridge builders of Toyomachi, the area formerly called Taneyama. Discover how masons assembled stone into river crossings through displays about their lives and construction methods. The museum building, with local tuff walls and a rounded roof, is part of the visit.

From the masons’ lives to bridge construction
Displays introduce Taneyama masons such as Sangoro Iwanaga and Kangoro Hashimoto, the conditions in which they worked and the solutions they devised. They explain the background to engineering achievements including Tsujunkyo Bridge. Toyomachi is described as retaining twenty-one stone bridges more than a century old. The museum provides useful context before viewing those crossings outside. Allow separate time for the displays, a meal and the bridges themselves.
Yasufumi Kijima’s tuff-walled building
Architect Yasufumi Kijima designed the building using locally quarried tuff. Its stone texture and rounded roof earned recognition through the Kumamoto Artpolis programme. Compare the museum’s material with the stone associated with bridge construction. Looking at the exterior as well as the exhibits makes the architecture part of understanding local masonry. It also creates a useful indoor stop within an itinerary that includes outdoor bridge viewing.
Age-based prices and the 16:00 admission cutoff
Admission is ¥310 for adults, ¥200 for high-school and university students and ¥100 for elementary and junior-high pupils. Group discounts begin at twenty people. Eligible physical, mental-health or intellectual-disability certificate holders and their carers enter free with the certificate. Hours are 09:00–16:30, but admission ends at 16:00. Closed Mondays, the following day when Monday is a holiday, and December 29–January 3. QR-code payment is supported; use the entry cutoff when planning a stop before travelling farther into the mountains.
Access from Arisa Station and the expressway
The museum is at 98-2 Kita, Toyomachi, about twenty minutes by car from Yatsushiro Interchange or thirty from Matsubase Interchange. Guidance gives around fifteen minutes by bus or ten by taxi from JR Arisa Station. The city lists it among facilities reopened after the earthquake. The restaurant at Toyo roadside station, in Minami, provides a separate local meal stop. This location works particularly well with the area’s bridges and ginger dishes, rather than as a city-centre museum visit.
