Granite and a first-order Fresnel lens
Designed by British engineer R. H. Brunton, the lighthouse was first lit on March 1, 1876. The roughly thirty-metre granite tower contains 105 spiral stairs. Its 2.59-metre-high octagonal first-order Fresnel lens, designed by Stevenson in Britain and manufactured by Barbier in France, remains in service. Designated an Important Cultural Property on December 23, 2020, the building combines carefully worked stone with a continuing navigational role.
Climbing the tower and exploring the park
Climbing the tower requires a ¥300 donation for junior-high pupils and older visitors. Elementary pupils and younger, disability-certificate holders and one accompanying person are exempt. Around the tower is Tsunoshima Lighthouse Park, with restored former keepers’ quarters serving as a memorial museum. Combine the elevated view with time at ground level to examine the stone tower and historic layout. The climb involves stairs, with different access conditions from a walk through the surrounding park.
A morning pause on November 20
Normal hours are 9:00–17:00 March–September and 9:00–16:30 October–February, with entry ending twenty minutes earlier. The autumn and winter deadline is therefore 16:10. Interior filming by the Moji Coast Guard and others pauses visits 9:00–12:00 on November 20, 2026; visits resume when work finishes. Plan the tower climb separately from other island stops.
Bus access and a planned winter detour
From Kottoi Station, a Blue Line bus takes about twenty-five minutes to Todai-koen-mae, followed by a five-minute walk. The usual drive is about eighty minutes from Shimonoseki IC via Routes 191, 275 and 276, or seventy from Mine IC via Route 435 and connecting roads. From November 24, 2026 to March 12, 2027, Route 191 beyond Shin-Futami junction in Kanda-kami has a scheduled all-day closure. Journeys to Tsunoshima during that period use the signed detour, including Prefectural Route 39, with additional travel time.
Other stops to combine within Shimonoseki
Shimonoseki extends from the station and Karato waterfront to Chofu, Kawatana, Kikugawa, Toyota and Hohoku. Allow travel time between districts and coordinate restaurant opening, accommodation arrival deadlines and attraction closures. Choose parking according to the district visited and each facility’s conditions.
