A small Japanese inn below Mount Iwaki
The inn stands at 20 Yunosawa in Tokiwano, in the mountain settlement of Dake Onsen. Its fourteen Japanese-style rooms, lobby and corridors retain the rhythm of a traditional hot-spring stay. Room provisions include a television, yukata, a warm outer robe, hand and bath towels and a toothbrush set. Check-in is 15:00 and checkout 10:00. Select a stay plan around time in the mountains and whether evening meals are included.
Cloudy sulphur water and overnight bathing
Acidic, cloudy sulphur water flows through the baths directly from the spring, without recirculation. Separate men’s and women’s areas have similar Aomori-hiba wooden tubs. Overnight guests can bathe around the clock except the daily cleaning period, 08:30–10:00. An evening soak followed by another early the next morning fits naturally into a stay. The published day-bathing admission is ¥350.
Maitake rice and seasonal meal plans
Dinner choices include eight-, eleven- and thirteen-dish courses, with appetisers, tempura, sashimi, table-grilled dishes, simmered food and mountain vegetables according to the stay plan. Maitake mushroom rice is a speciality. Request baked apple when booking if desired. Seasonal desserts may use Dake sweetcorn or Steuben grapes, while the actual menu varies by plan. Breakfast also introduces regional food such as shell-cooked miso.
Prepare payment and travel to the spring village
On-site credit-card payment is unavailable, so bring cash for accommodation and other charges. Parking is free, and buses run from Hirosaki towards Dake Onsen. Allow time after arrival for the inn’s food and baths, creating a day distinct from sightseeing in the city centre. Standard accommodation tax is ¥200 per person per night. Overnight hot-spring use attracts a ¥150 daily bathing tax for guests aged twelve and above; younger children are exempt.
More places for a Hirosaki itinerary
Combine the station area and castle-town walks with trips to Mount Iwaki’s foothills and Takaoka-no-Mori, arranging the order around meals and bathing sessions.
