Sweet making on Yamachosuji
Founded when the family changed from brewing to confectionery in 1838, Ohnoya remains on Yamachosuji in Kifune-machi. Otomo no Yakamochi’s poetry, local history and the seasons inform its designs. During a walk among townhouses and storehouses, the names and forms of sweets offer another connection to Takaoka culture.
Tokonatsu with white beans and wasanbon
Roughly three centimetres across, Tokonatsu encloses Bitchu white-bean paste in gyuhi and a coating of wasanbon sugar. It takes its name from Yakamochi’s poem about Tateyama snow. Six cost ¥702 and twelve ¥1,242, with a seven-day shelf life. The small pieces are a signature tea or gift sweet.
Moulded ramune and black-soybean mochi
Takaoka ramune is handmade with confectionery moulds and ingredients including Toyama Koshihikari rice. Festival floats, flowers, shells and treasures form motifs; ten cost ¥594 with a sixty-day shelf life. Autumn motifs run late August–November, winter motifs mid-November–late January. Koshi-no-Yakamochi uses local glutinous rice, tiny black soybeans and brown-sugar syrup, at ¥810 for three or ¥1,350 for five.
Shop hours and planning gifts
The Kifune-machi shop opens 8:30–19:00, closed Wednesdays except holidays. Walk seven minutes from the station’s north exit or drive ten from Takaoka Interchange, with four spaces. Choose shorter-lived mochi sweets or longer-lasting ramune around the intended gift date. Seasonal sweets and assortments provide further choices during a Yamachosuji walk.
Other stops to combine within Takaoka
Amaharashi combines shore and roadside-station views with an Isohanabi stay. Views depend on weather and the inn’s station transfer requires contact. Ohnoya is in central Yamachosuji, requiring a railway or car journey for gifts. Coordinate coastal parking demand, the sweet shop’s 19:00 closing and meals at the inn.
