Across the broad palace site, visitors can walk the former centre of government and see the surrounding Yamato Three Mountains. The landscape combines archaeological traces, the imagined arrangement of vanished buildings and seasonal flower fields. Its inclusion in the World Heritage property in 2026 adds international context to this place for understanding an ancient capital.

Walking the centre of an ancient capital
Fujiwara-kyo was completed in 694 and served as the capital for sixteen years. Its central palace occupied a roughly one-kilometre-square enclosure containing the imperial residence, Daigokuden audience hall, Chodoin ceremonial compound and government offices. Extensive tiled roofs and stone building foundations were important features. Today the site presents archaeological traces and open space rather than a fully reconstructed palace. Using the audience-hall area as a reference point helps visitors understand how a large political complex occupied this relatively level landscape.
World Heritage and the surrounding mountains
Ancient Capitals of Asuka and Fujiwara entered the World Heritage List on July 26, 2026, with this palace site one of nineteen component parts. The surrounding Yamato Three Mountains help explain its setting: Miminashiyama to the north, Unebiyama to the west and Kaguyama to the east. The Suzaku Avenue approaching the palace was about twenty-four metres wide, illustrating the planned relationship between streets and the ceremonial centre. Comparing traces on the ground with these hills gives a sense of scale and distance beyond a museum map.
Autumn cosmos and a two-day market
Seasonal displays include spring rape flowers and cherry blossoms, summer lotus and autumn cosmos. In autumn 2026 the cosmos area covers about 24,000 square metres, planted with roughly 2.4 million flowers of four varieties. Enjoy the scene from outside the beds as flowering progresses across the area. The Cosmos Marche brings food and merchandise stalls on October 17 and 18, 9:00–16:00. Admission is free; ordinary rain does not cancel it, but severe weather does. Keep out of flower beds and neighbouring farmland, using the designated paths between the archaeological landscape and event area.
Arriving on foot or by car
Admission is free. Unebi, Miminashi and Unebigoryomae stations are each around thirty minutes away on foot; buses from the Yamato-Yagi direction use Fujiwarakyo-Shiryoshitsu-mae as a useful stop. Free parking is provided, though flower seasons are busy, with the lot west of Suzaku Avenue also recommended in autumn 2026. Drivers should watch for pedestrians and children on nearby school routes. There are no rubbish bins, so take waste away. Bring water and sun protection for the open site, and plan the palace traces and flower area as distinct parts of the walk.
