Gesshoji is a Jodo Buddhist temple preserving the tombs of the Matsudaira lords of Matsue. Gates and stone lanterns stand among the trees, while a giant stone turtle connects the site with a legend retold by Lafcadio Hearn. Away from the busiest castle-town streets, the temple offers a quieter walk through history and storytelling.

Walk among the Matsudaira tombs
The temple contains the tombs of successive Matsudaira lords of Matsue. Gates, carvings and lanterns offer details to examine as you walk. The family memorials provide a different view of domain history from the defensive structure and outlook of Matsue Castle.
Matsudaira Harusato, known as the tea master Lord Fumai, is also buried here, linking the temple with Matsue’s tea culture. Respect the quiet character of the temple and cemetery and follow the indicated visitor routes. Admission to the site does not imply access to the interior of every building.
The giant turtle and Lafcadio Hearn
The giant turtle forms the base of a commemorative stele commissioned by Harusato for his father, Munenobu. Look at the stone structure as a whole as well as the memorable animal shape. The historical memorial and the stories later told about it offer two ways to understand the object.
The story of the turtle moving at night, also retold by Lafcadio Hearn, is a legend. Seeing the sculpture helps place that story in its setting. The current Shoin-restriction notice specifically states that visitors can still see the giant turtle as normal.
Separate admission from tea service
Admission is ¥700 for adults and ¥500 for elementary and junior-high-school students; preschool children enter free. Adult admission is ¥600 for groups of at least 30 and for eligible Lakeline-related discounts; discounts cannot be combined. The temple does not accept cashless payment, so bring cash for admission and any tea.
Matcha in the Shoin costs ¥600 per serving with a sweet, separate from admission. Normal tea service is 10:30–15:30 and ends before the 16:00 closing time. June visiting hours are 8:30–17:30, with tea 10:00–16:00. Groups wishing to have tea should reserve ahead.
October 2026 Shoin closures and the year-end break
An official October 2, 2026 notice closes the Shoin for tea-event preparation and use from 13:00 on October 23 and all day October 24, 25 and 30. On October 23, requests for tea must be made by 12:30. The rest of the grounds and the giant turtle remain available as normal; this is not a closure of the entire temple.
Normal visiting ends at 16:00, with last entry at 15:30. The year-end closure is December 31–January 3; anyone seeking worship or a goshuin during that period should contact the temple in advance. Check notices for weather- and event-related changes before travelling.
Transport and getting around the grounds
A taxi from JR Matsue Station takes about 10 minutes. The Lakeline stop Gesshoji-mae is close to the entrance; the official access page gives a 20-minute ride while the FAQ gives 15, so check the actual timetable. Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station is about 15 minutes away on foot. Parking is free, with advance contact required for large buses.
Historic paving and uneven ground create steps and difficult sections for wheelchair users. The official FAQ states that staff assistance is not provided. Discuss the route in advance with the temple and your companions if you need support, and consider footing and wet-weather conditions when planning the visit.
