Meimei-an is a tea house associated with Matsudaira Harusato, the seventh lord of Matsue and tea master known as Lord Fumai. On the Akayama rise behind Shiomi Nawate, its thatched building and garden provide a setting for exploring the city’s tea culture. A serving of matcha at the adjoining Hyakusotei adds another way to enjoy the visit.

A tea house reflecting Lord Fumai’s tastes
The tea house was built at the Arisawa family’s Matsue residence according to Lord Fumai’s tastes, and the official account describes his visits. The roof, name plaque and compact tea-room arrangement offer details through which to consider the design of a space made for tea.
After moves to Tokyo and other locations in Matsue, it was brought to its present Akayama site in 1966 for the 150th memorial observance of Lord Fumai. It should be understood as a tea house transmitted through relocation and restoration, rather than a building retaining every original material unchanged.
The garden and its elevated setting
The rise above Shiomi Nawate provides a setting for looking at the garden and tea house at a slower pace. The prefectural tourism guide notes a view of Matsue Castle near the resting point partway up the stone steps. The elevated viewpoint differs from walking along the street below.
Ordinary viewing of the building and garden differs from hiring a tea room for a ceremony or lesson. Follow on-site guidance rather than assuming a standard ticket permits unrestricted entry to every room. A reserved introductory course is another option for learning more about tea culture.
Admission and matcha at Hyakusotei
Admission is ¥600 for high-school students and adults, ¥300 for elementary and junior-high-school students, and free for preschool children. Groups of at least 20 pay ¥480 and ¥240 respectively. The official guide lists free admission for eligible disability-certificate holders and one carer; check how to present proof.
A serving of matcha at Hyakusotei costs ¥600 with two dry sweets, separate from admission. A standard adult choosing both should budget for the two separate ¥600 charges. Distinguish the viewing ticket and ordinary tea service from the price of a reserved special experience.
Tea service ends at 16:00 in autumn and winter
From October 1 through March 31, viewing hours are 9:00–17:00 with last admission 16:40. Matcha is served 9:50–16:00 and does not continue until the end of viewing hours. Arrive comfortably before 16:00 if you want tea as part of an afternoon visit.
In April–September, viewing extends to 9:00–18:00, last admission 17:40, while tea service is 9:50–16:30. The official site lists year-round opening. Contact the venue ahead for groups or a specific experience, as events or operating arrangements may affect access.
Steps, parking and the introductory course
Take the Lakeline bus from JR Matsue Station for about 15 minutes, then walk roughly 3–4 minutes from Shiomi Nawate. Five free parking spaces are listed below the steps. Because the approach climbs stone steps, discuss the available route and any assistance from companions before visiting if you have mobility needs.
The fiscal 2026 introductory course combines a talk about tea culture, tea and sweets, and viewing of the tea house and garden over about 70 minutes. It costs ¥1,800 per person, requires at least two participants and booking seven days ahead, and is not offered on weekends, public holidays or Thursday afternoons. These booking rules apply to the course, not all ordinary viewing or tea service.
