Mountain stories in the Legends Hall
Gokanosho comprises mountain settlements including Momiki, Nitao, Shiibaru, Hagi and Kureko. Legends of Heike refugees escaping pursuit remain intertwined with its culture. Objects, audiovisual material and figure displays at Heike no Sato introduce both history and inherited stories. Consider those accounts alongside the landscape and mountain livelihoods. Distinguishing documented events from local tradition also gives context when visiting the surrounding settlements.
A Noh stage in the mountain setting
A Noh stage within the grounds is used for kagura and other scheduled events. After viewing the indoor displays, walk outside to see the stage within its natural setting and appreciate the place where performance traditions continue. Performances take place on scheduled dates, rather than continuously with ordinary admission. A display-focused visit therefore differs from one arranged around a performance. Nearby Momiki suspension bridges offer another separate stop on a mountain itinerary.
Seasonal hours and cash admission
Admission is ¥410 from high-school age, ¥200 for elementary and junior-high pupils and free below elementary-school age. Groups of twenty or more receive twenty percent off the standard rate. Payment is cash only. Hours are 09:00–17:30 in April–November and 09:00–17:00 in December–March. Closed Tuesdays, the following day if a holiday, and December 29–January 3. For winter visits, use the earlier closing time and fit the journey into daylight. The facility appears in the city’s post-earthquake reopening information.
Driving to Momiki and free parking
The address is 160-1 Momiki, Izumimachi. City guidance gives around one hundred minutes by car from Matsubase Interchange or one hundred and ten from Yatsushiro Interchange. Fifty parking spaces are free. As this is a mountain location, leave time for the exhibits and surroundings rather than packing numerous distant settlements into the afternoon. An overnight stay in Momiki can be fitted around dinner and check-in, preserving time in the mountains instead of devoting the day entirely to a return drive.
