The Ogata Residence in Gokanosho’s Shiibaru settlement preserves an old mountain home and traditions connected with Heike refugees. Beside Route 445, the building offers a close view of settlement life through its distinctive form. It provides a small historic-house visit alongside the area’s larger interpretation facilities.

See the kabuto-style mountain house
The house is described as approximately three hundred years old and as an unusual kabuto, or helmet-style, form of gassho construction. A hidden room on the upper floor adds interest to its layout as well as the exterior. Unlike the display-oriented Heike no Sato, the residence itself is the main subject. Look at the roof and overall form while considering life passed down in Gokanosho’s mountain settlements. The building and its setting also make a compact stop within a longer local journey.
The Heike tradition behind the Ogata name
Local tradition says descendants of Taira no Kiyotsune adopted the Ogata name and settled in different parts of Gokanosho, with one hiding in Shiibaru. This house is one place associated with that story. It also hosts scheduled tea gatherings and biwa storytelling connected with the Tale of the Heike. Ordinary visits focus on the building rather than an ongoing performance. It is a separate destination from Heike no Sato in Momiki and provides another settlement’s perspective on the regional traditions.
Admission and seasonal visiting hours
Admission is ¥200 from high-school age, ¥100 for elementary and junior-high pupils and free below elementary-school age. Groups of twenty or more receive twenty percent off. Eligible physical, mental-health or intellectual-disability certificate holders and carers enter free with proof. Payment is cash only. City visitor guidance lists 08:00–17:30 in April–November and 09:00–17:00 in December–March. Closed Tuesdays, the following day if a holiday, and December 29–January 3. Both the opening and closing times change in winter, so fit the journey to the seasonal hours.
Shiibaru location and the journey to Gokanosho
The address is 46 Shiibaru, Izumimachi, with parking available. Guidance gives around ninety minutes by car from Matsubase Interchange or one hundred from Yatsushiro Interchange. The city identifies the residence as reopened after the earthquake. Gokanosho’s sights are distributed among settlements: include Shiibaru as the actual destination and allow additional travel time to places such as Momiki. A local meal or overnight stay can extend the visit beyond the historic-house display into the area’s living landscape.
