軍の倉庫から市役所、美術館へ

Long closure of the galleries and cafe
Major work on air-conditioning and other equipment closes the entire museum from April 1, 2026 through the planned end of December 2027. The cafe, permanent galleries and special-exhibition rooms are unavailable. The precise reopening date depends on the works schedule. During closure the museum runs outreach activities at other city venues, including an August–November programme current in October.
A sculpture garden east of the castle
The garden remains open 09:00–17:00, except Mondays, shifted to the next weekday when Monday is a holiday, and December 25–January 5. Thirteen outdoor sculptures share a setting of red brick, lawn and the castle beyond. It provides a stop while walking east of the castle, with different sculptures and viewpoints around the building.
From army storehouse to city hall and museum
The western wing was built as an army storehouse in 1905, with a clothing warehouse added in 1913. After serving as Himeji City Hall following the war, the building opened as an art museum on April 1, 1983. It became a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2003. The surviving brick exterior connects these former roles with the museum’s collection of modern art, sculpture, photography and crafts.
Walking and bus arrival
The address is 68-25 Honmachi, east of the castle. Walk around twenty minutes from JR or Sanyo Himeji Station, or alight at Himeyama-Koen-Minami/Iryo-Center/Bijutsukan-mae bus stop. Dedicated general-visitor parking is not provided; surrounding facilities include Himeyama Park Parking. Fit a garden visit into a castle-area walk before 17:00 and around its Monday and New Year closures.
