1. Visit Kagoshima Shrine in Hayato
Kagoshima Shrine has long been revered as the ichinomiya, or leading shrine, of former Osumi Province. Its traditions connect it to the legend of Umisachihiko and Yamasachihiko, and its deities include Hikohohodemi, also called Yamasachihiko, and Toyotamahime.
This shrine is in Hayatocho Uchi, separate from Kirishima Jingu in Taguchi. For rail access, Hayato Station serves Kagoshima Shrine, while Kirishima-Jingu Station serves Kirishima Jingu.
2. Important Cultural Property buildings
The main sanctuary, worship hall, imperial envoy hall and Shisho Shrine are nationally designated Important Cultural Properties. Their Edo-period architecture features curved roofs and detailed carving characteristic of shrine buildings in southern Kyushu.
The present shrine buildings date to 1756 according to the shrine’s history. A walk through the grounds combines views of the buildings and surrounding trees with the shrine’s mythology and architectural history.
3. Different hours for the grounds, counter and prayer ceremonies
The grounds are open for worship from sunrise to sunset. The shrine office, amulet counter and goshuin seal reception open 08:30–17:00, while individual prayer reception is 08:30–16:30. Visiting during counter hours allows time for amulets or a goshuin as well as worship.
Individual prayer ceremonies do not require a reservation and have offerings from ¥6,000. Group prayer offerings start at ¥10,000; group ceremonies, special New Year ceremonies and weddings require advance booking. Festivals or other events can cause a wait after reception.
4. Shichi-go-san visits and commemorative photographs
Shichi-go-san ceremonies are accepted throughout the year rather than only in November. Families may take commemorative photographs in the grounds with their own camera or smartphone.
Photography inside the main sanctuary is prohibited. No dedicated photographer is stationed at the shrine, so allow time separately for your own family photographs and the prayer ceremony.
5. Hatsuuma Festival and New Year visits
Hatsuuma Festival is held on the first Sunday after the eighteenth day of the first lunar month, generally in February or March. It is known for decorated horses wearing bells, called suzukake-uma, arriving with groups of dancers.
Hatsuuma brings congestion on surrounding roads, and temporary parking may supplement the regular car parks. Worship is also possible over New Year, when visitor numbers are high.
6. Walking from Hayato Station and arriving by car
JR Hayato Station on the Nippo Line is about 15 minutes away on foot. Allow approximately 15 minutes by taxi from Kokubu Station or 20 minutes by car from Mizobe-Kagoshima Airport Interchange. Approach-road, bus and main parking areas together provide free parking for about 200 vehicles.
On November 4, 10, 11, 17, 18, 24 and 25, 2026, track work is scheduled to cancel selected Nippo Line limited expresses between Miyazaki and Kagoshima-Chuo. Selected local trains between Miyakonojo and Kokubu are also affected; no replacement transport is provided.
