A reformer’s life at the family-home site
The museum introduces Kawai’s role in Nagaoka domain’s financial reforms and the upheavals of the late shogunate. At his family-home site, the focus extends beyond battles to study journeys and reform ideas. Following the material through his life connects the castle town with Japan’s transition towards a new political era.
Letters, a travel diary and a replica Gatling gun
Exhibits include calligraphy, correspondence, material concerning the travel diary Chiritsubo and a war fan. The Gatling gun is identified as a replica. Reproductions of manuscript and illustration material, together with an early edition of Ryotaro Shiba’s novel Toge, connect the historical figure with his portrayal in literature.
