Discover a Kitamaebune port through the restored house
The facility restores a Meiji-period shipping merchant property to an earlier appearance. Shimotsui prospered as an Edo-period Kitamaebune calling port, receiving goods including herring and kelp from Hokkaido. The house and storehouses connect coastal trade with merchant life. The museum forms part of the Japan Heritage story of Kitamaebune ports and shipowner settlements. Notice plaster walls and tiled roofs outside to extend the historical visit into the townscape.
Follow the house, everyday objects and historical models
The site includes the main house, collection storehouse and information building. Sailing-ship models, old currency and domain notes, toys and domestic tools extend attention from maritime work to everyday life. The information building presents the history and former prosperity of Shimotsui through models and other material. Alternate between the larger merchant spaces and smaller objects to consider the people trading, transporting goods and living here.
Separate the shop and restaurant schedules
Shinwa in the shopping building sells local processed seafood, including Shimotsui octopus products, normally 09:00–16:30. Cantina Tomi serves lunch 11:30–14:00 and dinner from 17:30 on weekdays or 18:00 weekends/holidays until 21:00, using the west entrance at night. The restaurant normally closes Mondays and Tuesdays, with holiday opening exceptions. Plan the relevant entrance and hours when combining daytime galleries with lunch or visiting for dinner separately.
Allow for admission time and a walk around the port
Admission is free, 09:00–17:00, with entry until 16:30. Tuesdays close, shifted after a Tuesday holiday, alongside post-holiday days and December 29–January 3. At 1-7-23 Shimotsui, drive about five minutes from Kojima interchange. Parking holds fifteen cars and two large vehicles. Set aside gallery time before heading into the harbour and preserved streets, fitting the wider walk around the museum cut-off and onward journey.
