Explore life aboard a sail-training ship
Nippon Maru is a preserved sailing ship designated an Important Cultural Property. Masts, ropes, trainee quarters, the captain’s reception room and officers’ saloon introduce shipboard life through photographs, objects and audio. Sails are normally furled; full-sail displays take place about 12 times a year. Check the official schedule and weather-related changes when planning around a sail display.
Port history and Ryohei Yanagihara’s art
Yokohama Port Museum traces the port from its opening to the present. Cargo-handling models, gantry-crane and small-ship simulators, and the five-screen Minato Capsule theater explore the port and Nippon Maru’s history and full-sail displays. The Ryohei Yanagihara Art Museum inside presents a feature on ships and port towns from September 25, 2026 to January 27, 2027. Combine models and art with a walk around the real harbor.
Combined tickets, single-site rates and Saturdays
A combined ticket covers both ship and museum: ¥800 for adults, ¥600 for ages 65+ and ¥300 for elementary, junior and senior high students. Ship-only admission is ¥400 / ¥250 / ¥200 for those categories; museum-only is ¥500 / ¥400 / ¥200. On Saturdays, those students pay ¥100 for either combined or single-site tickets. Bring proof of age for the 65+ rate. Eligible disability certificate holders and one carer enter free on presentation of the original certificate.
Monday closures and different maintenance periods
Normal hours are 10:00–17:00, last admission 16:30; sail-display dates open at 09:30. Mondays are closed, except public holidays followed by closure on the next weekday. Both facilities close December 28, 2026–January 4, 2027 and for maintenance January 28–February 4, 2027. Ship-only closures are scheduled for November 28–29, 2026 for sail removal and January 28–March 1, 2027 for hull maintenance. December 5–6, 2026 are reserve sail-removal dates if the November work is canceled; March 6–7, 2027 are reserve sail-fitting dates if work has not finished by March 1.
Children and wheelchair access aboard the ship
Watch low headroom, steps and stairs aboard the ship, using handrails and holding young children’s hands. Eating, drinking, bringing animals, climbing masts and entering closed areas are prohibited. Wheelchair visits are limited to the long poop deck and require a companion. Discuss assistance and the areas you want to see in advance, as access differs between ship and museum. Volunteer guides depend on staffing and crowding.
Arriving from Sakuragicho or Minatomirai
The complex is at 2-1-1 Minatomirai, about a five-minute walk from Sakuragicho, Minatomirai or Bashamichi stations. There is no general car parking; use public transport or a nearby paid lot. One accessible parking space is available free during a museum or ship visit with advance contact. Visiting buses require a group booking regardless of party size; parking-only use is unavailable. Choose a combined or single-site ticket to suit the visit.
