Okushi Shell Mound in the ancient gazetteer
The nationally designated Okushi Shell Mound formed in the Early Jomon period more than 5,500 years ago and appears in the Nara-period Hitachi provincial gazetteer. A viewing facility reveals the shell layers, connecting the archaeological site with the local giant story. Combining the remains and interpretation helps show how a shell mound records the activities of people who once lived in this landscape.
The Daidarabo statue and ancient dwellings
The 15.25-metre Daidarabo statue is the park’s landmark, with an observation area overlooking the surroundings. Jomon Kurashi no Shikikan introduces Mito’s past from the Palaeolithic period to early modern times, alongside reconstructed ancient dwellings. The on-site archaeological centre opened in April 2010 as a base for researching, preserving and interpreting archaeological remains across the city.
Open grounds and scheduled facility closures
The grounds remain open round the clock, but the statue, archaeological centre, shell-layer viewing facility and reconstructed dwellings operate 9:00–16:15. These facilities close Mondays, opening on holiday Mondays and closing the following Tuesday, plus December 29–January 3. Entry and parking are free; outdoor illumination ends at 21:00. Dogs may walk outside on leads, but pets cannot enter the park’s facilities.
Reaching Tsunezumi and arranging group visits
From Mito Station, buses take about twenty-five minutes to Okushi Koen, followed by a two-minute walk, or ten minutes from Tsunezumi Chosha-mae. Tsunezumi rail station is thirty minutes away on foot; Mito-Oarai interchange is about three minutes by car. Lot 1 holds fifty vehicles and lot 2 seventy; buses use lot 2. School and other groups arrange visits in advance and submit forms one month ahead. Eating inside buildings is prohibited, including in rain, so groups need a separate meal arrangement.
Other stops to combine within Mito
Combine Okushi Shell Mound sightseeing with meals in Higashidai or Motoyoshida while allowing driving time. Coordinate exhibit closing, the ramen shop’s afternoon break and sushi-shop holidays before returning to accommodation near the station or prefectural offices. General municipal parking and parking belonging to a restaurant or hotel serve separate destinations, so move the vehicle according to the planned stops.
