Kairakuen-shita is a car park in Tokiwa-cho serving garden visits. East Gate works are scheduled to switch admission to a temporary gate north of the East Gate toilets from November 6. Check the works-period entrance separately from the usual walking route, and plan parking and garden admission as separate costs.

East Gate works and the temporary entrance
At 1-6093-1 Tokiwa-cho, city and parking-operator listings give 168 car spaces, while the garden website lists 140. The usual East Gate approach is about five minutes by stairs or eight by slope. A temporary gate north of the East Gate toilets is planned from November 6; the notice body says around November, with works planned through February 2027. Timing depends on progress, so follow local directions. The garden website says large and micro buses cannot park during the renovation.
The ¥500 charge is per entry, not hourly
Normal paid operation is 8:00–17:00, at ¥500 per car per entry/day. This is a flat parking charge rather than an hourly tariff, payable in cash only. Different charges apply during the Mito Plum Festival. Garden admission and Kobuntei admission are separate expenses, allowing the parking cost and the chosen sightseeing charges to be planned independently.
Free access outside charging hours and wheelchair loans
Outside paid hours the car park is opened free of charge, and December 29–31 is excluded from normal paid operation. Charging hours can vary seasonally. Spaces are first come and cannot be reserved. Wheelchair loans are available 9:00–16:00. Kairakuen opens at 7:00 in winter and 6:00 in summer, so the garden’s opening and the car park’s charging start need to be considered separately.
Combine a visit with Lake Senba
A garden visit can be combined on foot with the Lake Senba area. Allow parking time for the walk between the garden entrance and the lakeside.
Other stops to combine within Mito
Around Kairakuen, the history museum and Lake Senba, combine garden visits with lakeside meals. Hotel and restaurant parking serves a different purpose from general public parking, so choose a parking place for each destination. When continuing to station-side dining, coordinate hotel arrival, food last orders and parking charges across the day.
