Architecture and outdoor sculpture beside the lake
Designed by Kiyonori Kikutake, the building responds to its lakeside setting and the museum’s theme of harmony with water. Allow time to look across the lake from the lobby as well as visit the galleries. Evening views depend on the season and cloud conditions, so a clear sunset cannot be guaranteed.
Outdoor sculptures include the Lake Shinji Rabbits. The outdoor sculpture area and ground-floor public facilities such as the lobby, shop and library do not require admission. Special and collection galleries and the viewing terrace do require a ticket. Keeping these areas separate helps you plan either a short stop or a longer visit.
Hokusai and a varied collection
The second-floor collection displays draw mainly on the museum’s holdings of Japanese and Western paintings, prints, crafts, photographs and sculpture. Japanese prints are a particular strength. Works in the Hokusai gallery rotate regularly, so a specific print is not necessarily on view throughout the year.
Collection admission is ¥400 for adults and ¥260 for university students, while elementary through high-school students enter free. Groups of at least 20 pay ¥320 and ¥200 respectively. This free-entry rule for school students does not automatically cover special exhibitions. The visitor guide also explains disability-related exemptions and accompanying-person conditions.
The autumn 2026 design exhibition and its prices
The Arts and Crafts and Design exhibition runs from September 11 to November 3, 2026, tracing developments from William Morris to Frank Lloyd Wright through the objects on display. Check subsequent exhibitions and changeover arrangements if visiting after the closing date.
Same-day admission to this special exhibition alone is ¥1,300 for adults, ¥800 for university students and ¥400 for elementary through high-school students. Same-day combined tickets with the collection cost ¥1,500, ¥930 and ¥400 respectively; online ticket prices differ. Tuesday November 3 is scheduled to be open despite the usual Tuesday closure, with the museum closed on Wednesday November 4 instead, so check the exhibition information and official calendar.
Autumn and winter closing times
From October through February, hours are 10:00–18:30 and gallery entry ends at 18:00. From March through September, the building closes 30 minutes after sunset and gallery entry ends at sunset. The sunset-based rule does not apply in autumn and winter. Plan a lakeside walk around the gallery entry deadline.
The usual closures are Tuesdays and December 28–January 1, subject to exhibition-related changes. The museum lists facilities such as a nursing room and wheelchair and stroller loans. Ask in advance about availability and procedures if you need particular equipment.
Station access and the 230-space car park
Walk about 15 minutes from JR Matsue Station or take the inward South Loop city bus for about 6 minutes to Kenritsu Bijutsukan-mae. From Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station, the Lakeline bus takes about 15 minutes. The main car park is about 3 minutes from the entrance via an underpass. Ordinary visitors should use it rather than the limited entrance rotary spaces.
Parking is free for the first 3 hours, then ¥100 per hour, with a ¥500 overnight charge for 22:00–08:00. Entry is available 08:00–21:30 on opening days and 08:00–18:00 on closed days; exit is possible 24 hours a day. The lot is closed December 28–January 1. Neither all-day free parking nor unrestricted 24-hour entry is included.
